**1. THE STRUCTURE OF THE TEACHING
YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS VS. THE HYPOCRITES
BEFORE OTHERS TO BE SEEN
BUT WHEN ...
RECEIVED THEIR REWARD VS FATHER WILL REWARD YOU**
Matthew 5:16.
… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
1 John 2:28–3:3
And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Matthew 23:5
They do all their deeds to be seen by others.Kent Hughes
The truth is, they were not giving but buying, and they got what they paid for. It is possible to be the most generous Christian around, both in the amount and proportion you give, and yet have no reward except what you immediately receive._
Hebrews 12:1–2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:7
It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
Kent Hughes
The truth is, they were not giving but buying, and they got what they paid for. It is possible to be the most generous Christian around, both in the amount and proportion you give, and yet have no reward except what you immediately receive.
C. S. Lewis
We must not be troubled by unbelievers when they say that this promise of reward makes the Christian life a mercenary affair. There are different kinds of reward. There is the reward which has no natural connexion with the things you do to earn it, and is quite foreign to the desires that ought to accompany those things. Money is not the natural reward of love; that is why we call a man a mercenary if he marries a woman for the sake of her money. But marriage is the proper reward for a real lover, and he is not mercenary for desiring it.… The proper rewards are not simply tacked on to the activity for which they are given, but are the activity itself in consummation.

The Way of the King demands an unobtainable perfection freely gifted to us in Christ
The Way of the King
Seldom is the way of the King
                                        Our natural response
                                        Easy
                                        Us obtaining what we want
Often the Way of the King is
                                        Suffering
                                        Persecution
Dying - If not literal, then at least to what I want
Deuteronomy 6:4-6 The SHEMA
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
Joel 2:12-13
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.
Matthew 5:17
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them”
Col 1:19-20
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Matthew 5:31-32 - Divorce
_“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. _
Deuteronomy 24:1-4
“When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
Matthew 19:3-9
And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
Matthew 5:33-37 - Oaths
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.”
Leviticus 19:11-12
You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
Matthew 23:16
Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.
Col 1:19-20
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Matthew 4:17
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Matthew 5:17 & 20
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them…For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven
Psalm 51:17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit
Deuteronomy 6:4-6
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
RETALIATION
Leviticus 24:17-20
Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death. Whoever takes an animal’s life shall make it good, life for life. If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him, fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him.
LOVE YOUR ENEMIES
Leviticus 19:17-18.
You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
Who can walk in the way of the King?
A. Only the king has walked it perfectly
B. Jesus the King was humiliated and suffered it without resisting
C. Jesus bore our sin and shame all the way to the cross.
            1. He was slapped in the face before the High Priest
            2. He was stripped naked and bare by the soldiers outside Pilates court
            3. He was conscripted to carry his own cross to his death
            4. Even on the cross he was begged of by the dying thief and he did not
withhold but offered grace for his belief
D. Now we too can walk in the way of the King
Hebrews 10:12-14
But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

James 2:10
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
Romans 7:6
But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
Romans 10:4
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Romans 8:3–4
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
A. W. Pink
The ceremonial law has not been destroyed by Christ, but the substance now fills the place of its shadows.
A. W. Pink
So far was it from being His design to repudiate the holy Law, He had become incarnate in order to work out that very righteousness it required, to make good what the Levitical institutions had foreshadowed, and to bring to pass the Messianic predictions of Israel’s seers.
Theodore Beza
Christ came not to bring any new way of righteousness and salvation into the world, but to fulfil that in deed which was shadowed by the figures of the Law: by delivering men through grace from the curse of the Law; and moreover to teach the true use of obedience which the Law appointed, and to grave in our hearts the force of obedience.

        a. PRESERVATIVE:
                i. Salt changes the environment.
ii. Salt gathers in clumps, but salt scatters into meat.
iii. Imagine the work of salt in decaying meat
        b. FLAVOR ENHANCER:
        c. SALTINESS OR WORTHLESSNESS:

ii. Reflects the light of the True Light.
                iii. Walks in Holiness
3. THE HARSH REALITY OF SALT AND LIGHT IN A WORLD OF DARKNESS AND DECAY
        a. Salt in Rotten Meat
        b. Light in a Dark World
John 15:8
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Job 6:6
Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt,
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Matthew 23:15
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
John 1:6-9
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
John 8:12
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
Lloyd-Jones
What if the church engaged in Christian living with evangelistic fervour?

Basically, salt works by drying food. Salt absorbs water from foods, making the environment too dry to support harmful mold or bacteria.
todayifoundout.com
The extra salt has other effects as well though, outside of simply making things more salty. Particularly, adding salt to foods helps certain molecules in those foods more easily release into the air, thus helping the aroma of the food, which is important in our perception of taste.
C.S. Lewis describes Aslan:
Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,
at the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.
A. W. Pink
This figure plainly warns the minister of his pressing need of fortitude. It is “salt” and not sugar candy he is to employ: something which the ungodly will be more inclined to spit out than swallow with a smile, something which is calculated to bring water to the eyes rather than laughter to the lips.
A. W. Pink
Hereby each one may see what he is in himself by nature: depraved and corrupt, as unsavoury flesh and stinking carrion in the nostrils of God, or else what need of salt?

What if the church engaged in Christian living with evangelistic fervour?

chemistry.about.com
Basically, salt works by drying food. Salt absorbs water from foods, making the environment too dry to support harmful mold or bacteria.

todayifoundout.com
The extra salt has other effects as well though, outside of simply making things more salty. Particularly, adding salt to foods helps certain molecules in those foods more easily release into the air, thus helping the aroma of the food, which is important in our perception of taste.

THE SERMON OUTLINE
THE SERMON OUTLINE
Matthew 5:1-16: The Character of the Christian
Matthew 5:17-48: The Christian Faces the Law
Matthew 6:1-34: The Christian Lives in the Presence of God
Matthew 7:1-29: The Christian Lives in the Fear of God
THE INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
THE GOSPEL
Revelation 11:15
The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.
Matthew 4:23–5:1
And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
Psalm 19:7–11:
_The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the LORD are true,
and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
Hebrews 12:28–29
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Matthew 7:28–29
_And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. _
Martin Lloyd-Jones
The world today is looking for, and desperately needs, true Christians. I am never tired of saying that what the Church needs to do is not to organize evangelistic campaigns to attract outside people, but to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings.
Kent Hughes
Contrary to popular opinion, blessed does not mean “happy,” even though some translations have rendered it this way. Happiness is a subjective state, a feeling. But Jesus is not declaring how people feel; rather, he is making an objective statement about what God thinks of them. Blessed is a positive judgment by God on the individual that means “to be approved” or “to find approval.” So when God blesses us, he approves us.
Lloyd-Jones puts it this way
A man may play a piece of great music quite accurately; he may make no mistakes at all. And yet it may be true to say of him that he did not really play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. He played the notes correctly, but it was not the Sonata. What was he doing? He was mechanically striking the right notes, but missing the soul and the real interpretation. He wasn't doing what Beethoven intended and meant. … The artist, the true artist, is always correct. Even the greatest artist cannot afford to neglect rules and regulations. But that is not what makes him the great artist. It is this something extra, the expression; it is the spirit, it is the life, it is the whole that he is able to convey.
