Our zeal for public worship as believers ought to excel, ought to exceed, the zeal of the worshipers of the old covenant. No Israelite [of the Old Covenant] ought to be able to give us a run for our money in gathering with the people of God to worship Him because we have seen the One that all of the types and shadows of the Old Testament pointed to. We have seen the fulfillment of all the prophecies and all the promise of the Old Testament, and our zeal should exceed the zeal of those Israelites under the old covenant.

We think that if we don’t feel something there can be no authenticity in doing it. But the wisdom of God says something different: that we can act ourselves into a new way of feeling much quicker than we can feel ourselves into a new way of acting. Worship in an act that develops feelings for God, not a feeling for God that is expressed in an act of worship. When we obey the command to praise God in worship, our deep, essential need to be in relationship with God is nurtured.

1. Read Psalm 122:1. Why is David glad in this verse? Consider your own thoughts and emotions about gathering for worship. Discuss these thoughts with your CG.
2. Read Psalm 122:3-5. The congregation in Jerusalem finds both worship and justice. Consider how the church may seek both worship and justice when we gather in the name of the Lord?
3. Read Psalm 122:6-9. The Psalm ends with multiple prayers for peace. What is David’s motivation for praying for peace?
4. The final words of the psalm are, “I will seek your good.” Look at a few of the verses on “building up” the church above. How can we seek the good of the church?
